Frequently Asked Questions — Modern Pain Solutions
What is interventional pain management?
Interventional pain management is a subspecialty of pain medicine that focuses on using minimally invasive, image-guided procedures — such as injections, nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation, regenerative therapies, and implantable devices — to diagnose and treat chronic pain at its source. Unlike general pain management, which may rely primarily on oral medications, interventional techniques deliver targeted treatment directly to the pain generator, often providing superior, longer-lasting relief with fewer systemic side effects.

What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring a photo ID, your insurance card, a list of your current medications and dosages, any prior imaging studies (X-rays, MRI, CT scans) on disc or accessible via a patient portal, and any relevant medical records from prior treating physicians. If you are coming for evaluation of a personal injury, any accident reports, attorney contact information, or case manager details are also helpful. Arriving 10–15 minutes early to complete your new patient paperwork is recommended.
Does Modern Pain Solutions accept insurance?
Yes. Modern Pain Solutions accepts most major insurance plans. We encourage you to contact our office at (818) 826-4145 prior to your appointment to verify your specific coverage and benefits. We also accept Medicare and work with personal injury and workers’ compensation cases on a lien basis, meaning patients can receive treatment regardless of their immediate insurance status pending resolution of their claim.
Does Modern Pain Solutions treat personal injury and car accident cases?
Yes. Modern Pain Solutions specializes in treating pain from car accidents, slips and falls, workplace injuries, and other personal injury incidents. We provide expert medical evaluation, thorough clinical documentation, and rapid turnaround on reports — supporting both your recovery and your legal case. We accept lien-based cases and coordinate directly with your attorney and case manager. Learn more on our Personal Injury page.
How do I know if I need an injection or a more advanced procedure?
The appropriate treatment for your pain depends on your specific diagnosis, the severity of your condition, your prior treatment history, and your overall health and goals. At Modern Pain Solutions, Dr. Lim takes a conservative-first approach — recommending the least invasive effective option as the starting point. A thorough evaluation, which may include a review of your imaging, will allow him to recommend a personalized treatment plan and explain the rationale for each recommended intervention.
What is the difference between PRP therapy and a steroid injection?
A corticosteroid injection works by suppressing inflammation quickly, often providing relief within days — but the effects are typically temporary, and repeated steroid injections can have adverse effects on tissue over time. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy uses concentrated growth factors from your own blood to stimulate tissue repair from the inside out. PRP takes longer to show results but tends to be more durable and is safe to repeat without the tissue-degradation risks associated with steroids.
What is spinal cord stimulation and who is it for?
Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an advanced neuromodulation therapy in which a small implanted device delivers gentle electrical pulses to the spinal cord, interrupting chronic pain signals before they reach the brain. It is typically recommended for patients with chronic neuropathic pain — including failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, and refractory back and leg pain — who have not achieved adequate relief from medications and injections. A reversible trial period is always performed before permanent implantation.
What is the MILD procedure and how can it help spinal stenosis?
The MILD procedure (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression) is a cutting-edge, outpatient technique for treating lumbar spinal stenosis. Using specialized micro-instruments and fluoroscopic guidance, Dr. Lim removes small pieces of excess bone and thickened ligament tissue to decompress the spinal canal and relieve nerve pressure — without implanting hardware, performing fusion, or requiring general anesthesia. Many patients experience significant improvement in their ability to stand and walk following the procedure. Learn more on our Minimally Invasive Spine page.
